Wigton Energy has announced its success in the Generation Procurement Entity’s (GPE) 100MW renewable energy tender.
Following a rigorous selection process, Wigton Energy emerged as one of two entities awarded in the tender process. Wigton will install a 49.83MW solar energy facility in the parish of Clarendon, which, upon completion, will be the largest solar installation in Jamaica.
This achievement further cements Wigton Energy’s position as the leading renewable energy provider in Jamaica and the English-speaking Caribbean. The solar project reflects Wigton Energy’s ongoing commitment to supporting Jamaica’s clean energy transition and addressing global climate change.
The company said that with this award, Wigton reinforces its leadership in diversifying the country’s energy mix and expanding beyond its established portfolio in wind energy.
Gary Barrow, CEO of Wigton Energy, expressed his pride in this milestone achievement, stating: “This project is a testament to the impact of the strategic shift Wigton Energy has undertaken to diversify into multiple forms of renewable energy and not just wind.
“This solar installation not only demonstrates our leadership but also our dedication to securing a sustainable energy future for our children and future generations. We remain committed to driving the necessary shift towards incorporating more renewable energy sources in Jamaica’s energy mix and are excited to take on more projects and innovations that align with this vision.”
As Jamaica strives to increase the share of renewables in its energy portfolio, Wigton Energy stands at the forefront of this critical transformation. The new solar installation in Clarendon will deliver clean, sustainable energy, contributing to the nation’s energy independence and environmental goals.
The company said it looks forward to continuing its collaboration with stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of this landmark project and to setting new benchmarks in the region’s renewable energy landscape.
