“After 60 years of diplomatic relations, the bond between Jamaica and Dominican Republic remains strong.” — Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to Jamaica Angie Martinez.
Dominican Republic’s Ambassador to Jamaica Angie Martinez has done a fantastic job during her tenure and will be taking up a new assignment next year. She has established herself as one of the foremost ambassadors in Jamaica in recent years with her professionalism and charm and has strengthened the bond between the two Caribbean countries.
On Friday she hosted a reception commemorating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations Between Jamaica and the Dominican Republic at her official residence in Kingston.
Our Today shares her remarks from the event:
“Ladies and gentlemen, good evening and welcome to this historic celebration marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.
“Tonight, under the theme ‘Celebrating 60 Years of Friendship and the Birth of a New Era of Partnership, Connectivity, Trade, Achievements, Milestones, and Shared Success’, we reflect on our shared journey, celebrate our accomplishments, and look forward to the bright future ahead.
“As we commemorate six decades of friendship and collaboration since December 4, 1964, I stand with immense pride in the incredible progress we have achieved, particularly during my tenure over the past three and a half years. It has been a privilege to witness and contribute to this dynamic and flourishing relationship.
“One of the most significant highlights of this period was the first-ever political consultation between the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, held during the visit of Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith along with His Excellency Roberto Alvarez. This historic occasion not only marked a new chapter in our bilateral relations but also laid the foundation for deeper political dialogue and mutual understanding between our nations.
“Our trade achievements are among the most remarkable aspects of this partnership. Over the years, commercial trade between our nations has reached unprecedented levels, with a total trade volume of $134 million. More significantly, this growth has been increasingly reciprocal, with Jamaican exports to the Dominican Republic multiplying tenfold.
“This shift reflects our shared commitment to creating a win-win relationship, balancing opportunities for both nations, and underscores the strength of our economic bond.
“But this success would not have been possible without the unwavering support and constant engagement of Senator Aubyn Hill. During my tenure, Minister Hill has visited the Dominican Republic an impressive three times—a clear demonstration of his commitment to strengthening our economic ties. For this, we are profoundly grateful.
“Both Minister Hill and Minister Johnson Smith have also been pivotal in making our two editions of Dominican Week in Jamaica resounding successes. Their steadfast dedication to these initiatives has yielded tangible results, not only in boosting commerce but also in enriching the cultural bond between our countries.
“Another transformative achievement has been in the area of connectivity with the establishment of the first direct flight by a Dominican airline, Arajet, connecting Santo Domingo and Kingston. The introduction of Arajet has revolutionised travel between our nations. This year alone, we have witnessed 75,000 travellers journeying between Santo Domingo and Kingston. And with the inclusion of Punta Cana in this network as of November 1, 2024, the potential for increased interaction has only grown. When we factor in those utilising the Dominican Republic as a hub, the numbers soar even higher—a clear indication of the vibrancy of our bilateral relations.
“The flights have opened new avenues for collaboration and deepened the ties between our people, bringing us closer than ever before.
“Ladies and gentlemen, this year, we were honorued to host the Honourable Daryl Vaz, minister of science, energy, telecommunications and transport, on an official visit to the Dominican Republic. This visit was not only fruitful but pivotal in advancing several key areas of collaboration between our countries.
“We are well on our way to fulfilling many of the commitments made during Minister Vaz’s trip, particularly in the realm of connectivity and infrastructure. We are in the final steps to sign our Air Service Agreement, an initiative that will further strengthen the links between our nations by enhancing connectivity and expanding opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment.
“But I couldn’t achieve all of this without the full support of a country that [has opened its] arms to me from the [beginning] — the Government, the business community, the people in the street. Thank you for everything.
“Thanks to my hardworking team at the Dominican Embassy and at the residence — Miguel, Daniel, Jancer, Lashawn, Aurora and Lisbeth who aren’t here anymore, Kirk Mayvai, Mirta, Nana, Delroy, Nero —thank you for your tireless efforts and unwavering commitment.
“You are the heart of all we have accomplished, and I am deeply grateful for each of you. Together, we turned dreams into realities and proved that a small but mighty team can make a big difference.
“Unforfortunately, tonight, we are not only celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, but also the incredible journey my husband, Ambassador Edward Pérez, and I have shared with you during nearly four unforgettable years in this beautiful country.
“Over these years, I have had the privilege of not only representing the Dominican Republic but also becoming a true Jamaican. What began as a professional mission quickly became a personal journey —one that has left an indelible mark on my heart.
“It is the people of Jamaica who have made this journey truly extraordinary. You welcomed Edward and me not just as diplomats, but as family. You shared your culture, your stories, and your lives with us, and in doing so, you gave us a home away from home.
“I will forever cherish the friendships I’ve formed here and the new family I have met.
“These relationships are a reminder that at the heart of diplomacy are the human connections that transcend borders and politics.
“When the times come, I will miss everything about Jamaica — your music, your food, your vibes. I will miss the energy of Kingston’s streets, the beauty of your landscapes, the spice of your jerk chicken, and the unmistakable rhythm of reggae, but most of all, I will miss the warmth of your smiles and the love that you so freely give.
“But I will also miss my Dominican community here in Jamaica. Thank you for being ambassadors of our culture and heritage. You are a source of pride and inspiration, and your contributions have strengthened the bond between our two nations.
“As I prepare to leave, my heart is heavy but full. Jamaica has given me so much more than I could have ever imagined, and for that I am eternally grateful.
“As we celebrate these successes, I am delighted to share with you a brief video presentation that encapsulates some of the most impactful moments of the past four years. This compilation, though a challenge to condense, represents what we consider to be the key highlights of our shared journey.
“I extend my heartfelt thanks to Nasburn for bringing this visual narrative to life. It is a tribute to the hard work, dedication, and collaboration that have defined our efforts.
“As we commemorate this 60-year milestone, let us not only honour the past but embrace the future with optimism and determination.
“The bond between Jamaica and the Dominican Republic is strong, and I am confident it will only grow stronger in the years to come.
“Thank you.”
