High school honours were even at the 48th staging of the prestigious Gibson McCook Relays as Tajay Gayle soared and Zandrion Barnes sizzled in what was the last performances inside the National Stadium before the scheduled resurfacing.

Calabar High and Jamaica College (JC) won three relays each with Kingston College (KC) copping two including closing the show with a wonderful run in the 4x400m event.

On the girls’ section, Edwin Allen and Hydel High, both won three relays in what is a clear indicator that Girls Champs will be decided by these two powerhouses.

Calabar won the Class One 4x100m in a spectacular 39.60 seconds and was just outside the record they held of 39.32s. The sizzling Calabar quartet were Jamal Stephenson, Shaquane Gord who burnt up the backstretch, Dijon Swaine and Khamani Gordon.

Two other schools also dipped below the 40-second barrier as JC finished second with 39.88s and Excelsior High third with 39.99s.

The green and black boys from Red Hills Road also won the 4x200m in Classes Two and Three and were first passed the post in the 4x800m Open but were disqualified along with three other schools including JC and KC.

JC’s three victories came in the Class Three and Four 4x100m and the Class Four 4x200m relays.

KC won the Class Two 4x100m in 41.26s the same time as second-placed Calabar and the 4x400m Open in 3:10.26 which was a welcome return to the track for anchorman Taj-Marques White in his first race in two years.

William Knibb High sped to victory in the Class One 4x200m clocking 1:26.05 while Alphansus Davis High took the Sprint Medley Open in 3:35.87 and the Mixed Relays in 3:30.61.

In the 4x400m for clubs, Zandrion Barnes led Sprintec to victory clocking 3:06.78 ahead of Racers and world champion Antonio Watson in 3:07.72.

Barnes, who opened his season with a fast 44.96s two weeks ago, collected the baton approximately five metres behind the world champion Watson and ran passed him up the straight like he wasn’t there taking Sprintec to a decisive win.

Meanwhile having run a superb second leg in Sprintec’s record run of 43.06s in the Clubs 4x100m, Ashanti Moore seemed to have found her niche and ready to deliver on the promise she left Hydel High showing.

However, she returned for the 60m dash and pulled up metres before the line clocking 7.18s for second behind winner Tina Clayton of MVP who stopped the clock at 7.04s.

Section two of the 60m dash was won by MVP’s Tia Clayton clocking 7.02 ahead of Sprintec’s Shashalee Forbes in 7.12s and Natasha Morrison of MVP was third in 7.14s, the same time as her teammate Jonelle Smith in fourth.

Julian Forte of Elite Track was quickest overall in the men’s 60m clocking 6.48s ahead of Nishion Ebanks of MVP in 6.55s while Wolmer’s schoolboy Gary Card looked good winning his heat in 6.57s and was third quickest overall.
