Warner Bros. Discovery is pushing back its highly anticipated prequel to the ‘Game of Thrones‘ franchise to 2026.
Initially scheduled to be broadcast in the summer of 2025, ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ was announced as the newest television adaptation of George R.R Martin’s ‘Dunk and Egg‘ novellas, which occurs in the same universe as his main ‘A Song of Ice and Fire‘ series.
The ‘A Song of Ice and Fire‘ books formed the basis for HBO Max’s hit 2011-2019 show, ‘Game of Thrones’.
‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ is the third television adaptation to be championed by HBO, coming on the heels of ‘House of the Dragon‘, which released its second season in 2024.
This new series takes place in the period between ‘House of the Dragon‘ and ‘Game of Thrones‘, following the story of the commoner-turned-knight Duncan the Tall, and his companion, Prince Aegon ‘Egg’ Targaryen.

According to HBO’s head of drama series and films, Francesca Orsi, ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ was set to be done on a more ‘intimate’ and personal scale than previous projects in the Game of Thrones franchise.
The initial outline called for it to be a three-season show, based on the three ‘Dunk and Egg’ novellas released by George R.R Martin. The first season was set to have six episodes.
Warner Bros. has confirmed that the show will not be released until early 2026, coming in several months before the third season of ‘House of the Dragon‘.
Martin has claimed to have watched a private screening of six episodes, and is reportedly satisfied with the progress made, as well as with the overall script and actors.
