Aston Villa’s president of football operations, Monchi, has parted ways with the club following a disappointing winless start to the English Premier League (EPL) 2025-2026 season.

The 57-year-old Spaniard joined Villa in June 2023, reuniting with Unai Emery after a successful stint together at Sevilla. During his time at the club, Villa enjoyed a resurgence, finishing fourth and sixth in back-to-back Premier League campaigns and making it to the Champions League quarterfinals last season.

However, the momentum hasn’t carried over into the new campaign. Villa failed to qualify for the Champions League this year, narrowly missing out on the final day with a loss to Manchester United. Their summer transfer window also raised eyebrows, with limited permanent signings. Only Evann Guessand and goalkeeper Marco Bizot arrived on full deals, while Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho came in on deadline day loans. Victor Lindelöf joined on a free.

On the pitch, things have gone from bad to worse. Emery’s side have failed to win any of their first five league matches and have managed just one goal scored by Matty Cash in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with 10-man Sunderland.

Monchi’s departure adds another layer of uncertainty at Villa Park, where a once-promising project is suddenly struggling to stay on course.
