Ethiopian marathoner Shewarge Alene, winner of the 2025 Stockholm Marathon, has tragically died at just 30 years old.
Alene was training in Ethiopia on Thursday (September 25) when she began to feel unwell. She was quickly taken to a hospital in Addis Ababa, but despite efforts to save her, she passed away shortly after.
Alene was enjoying a standout year, setting a personal best of 2:29:34 at the Tata Mumbai Marathon in January and going on to claim victory in Stockholm in May, a race that became one of the highlights of her career. Over the course of her professional journey, she won 12 of the 27 marathons she entered.
She had made a home for herself in Mexico, where she notched several race wins, and had also lived in New York before returning to Ethiopia more recently.
