The West Indies crashed out of the ICC T20 World Cup after losing to India by five wickets at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday (March 1).

West Indies made 195-4 from their 20 overs, but the host nation reached the target, making 199-5 on the back of a brilliant 97 not out from player-of-the-match Sanju Samson, who opened the innings and carried bat all the way to see his team into the semi-finals.

India won the toss and asked the West Indies to bat first, and they might have thought it was the wrong choice as the Windies raced to 68 before losing Shai Hope for 32 in the ninth over.

Rovman Powell

Hope hit three fours and one six as he, along with Roston Chase, who made 40, set the tone for the Caribbean men to launch a big score, but in the end, they failed to reach the coveted 200m mark.

Jason Holder batting at number six made 37 not out with two fours and three sixes from 22 balls, and Rovman Powell hit 34 not out from 19 balls with three fours and two sixes and reached 150 sixes, the most by a West Indian.

Shimron Hetmyer smashed 27 from 12 balls with two sixes and a four and ended with a strike rate of 225 per cent.  But the total always looked short by 20 runs, and it did.

Jasprit Bumrah took 2-36, Hardik Pandya took 1-40, and Varum Chakaravarthy got 1-40 bowling for India.

The home team lost their first wicket at 29-1 when Abhishek Sharma went for 10 from 11 balls, as things looked good for the West Indies. The second wicket fell at 42-2 when Ishan Kishan went for 10 runs.

But Samson, lived up to his Biblical name, showed tremendous strength and carried the Indian nation on his back into the semi-final with a 97 masterclass from 50 balls, hitting 12 fours and four sixes.

Bowling for the West Indies, Jason Holder took 2-38, Shamar Joseph got 2-42, and Akeal Hosein took 1-22.

India now joins South Africa, England and New Zealand as the last four teams standing. It was a good run by the West Indies as they played some very good cricket throughout.
