The Jamaica Badminton Association inaugural SMASH Jamaica 2026, Jamaica International concluded on Sunday, August 9, at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium, University of Technology (UTech), Kingston, with players from Jamaica and around the world battling for top honours in an exciting display of international badminton.

The Jamaica International, which formed the opening tournament of the SMASH Jamaica 2026 series, assembled elite Jamaican and foreign talent, giving local competitors vital international experience and ranking opportunities. The tournament was staged from August 5–9, 2026.

Jamaica enjoyed major success in the Mixed Doubles (XD) competition, with Joel Angus and Tahlia Richardson taking first place.

They were followed by fellow Jamaicans Kenneth Anglin and Brenna Bisnott in second, while Matthew Abela and Gabriela Skorkowska of Malta/Poland and Jamaica’s Matthew Yee-Grant and Aaliyah Walker shared third place.

The Women’s Doubles (WD) title went to Sydney Hanyue Li and Katelin Ngo of the United States. While their country mates Kavya Krishna and Kimaya Krishna finished joint third alongside Elisa Del Passo Fraga and Juliana Akemi Murosaki of Brazil

Naomi Junco Vasquez and Namie Miyahira of Peru held the second place title.

First place in the Men’s Doubles (MD), was captured by Sai Pratheek K. and Ruben Kumar Rethinasabapathi of India.

Srinivas Subash and Joshua Yang of the United States finished second, with Zachary Desjardins and Yanqing Wang of Canada, and Guillermo Buendia Maldonado and Umesh Lescano Ko of Peru, taking joint third.

Ines Lucia Castillo of Peru emerged as the winner of the Women’s Singles (WS) event. Disha Gupta of the United States finished second, while Kavya Krishna of the United States and Juliana Akemi Murosaki of Brazil shared third place.

The Men’s Singles (MS) title was won by Julien Scheiwiller of Switzerland.

Milestone achieved! The successful Jamaica International fuels the Jamaica Badminton Association’s drive to anchor high-level global sports in Jamaica. The event brought together over 64 local stars and international competitors spanning 19 countries from the United States, Canada, India, Brazil, Peru, Switzerland, Malta, Poland, and more.

President VJ Tolan is pleased with the execution of the event. “From an organisational perspective, the team did well, and the feedback from athletes and patrons has been quite positive. We see where we can really evolve this to something amazing. Team Jamaica also showed some great potential in the games. Sweeping the mixed doubles is a positive, and Joel Angus and Tahlia Richardson, our top players, advanced to the quarter-finals in their respective singles. Additionally, our objective of exposing our local talent to high-quality international competition has been achieved, and our players understand the work we have to do to improve our level to be more competitive in the region and internationally”.

The conclusion of the Jamaica International now sets the stage for the next phase of SMASH Jamaica 2026, which continues with the Carebaco Junior and Senior Team Championships (Aug. 9-12), followed by the Carebaco Junior and Senior Individual Championships (Aug. 14-18).

The Jamaica Badminton Association extends congratulations and appreciation to all athletes, officials, volunteers, partners and supporters who contributed to the successful staging of the Jamaica International 2026. Tickets will cost patrons (7yrs and above) $500 for a daily pass and $3000 for a season pass.
