A mainstream transition is closer to realisation for dancehall heavyweight Masicka, who became the latest signing to New York-based record label Def Jam Recordings on Tuesday (February 14).

In a statement to Variety, label chairman Tunji Balogun regarded Masicka’s lyricism in high esteem, ranking the 31-year-old Portmore native among the next generation of influential Jamaican deejays.

“Def Jam has always been the home for great artists across the wide spectrum of Black music, and Masicka is very much emblematic of that vision,” Balogun said.

“Representing the new wave of Jamaican dancehall and reggae, Masicka’s versatility and unique sonic perspective has the potential to impact markets all over the world. It feels like the beginning of something very special. We’re excited to welcome him to our Def Jam family,” he continued.

Founded in Manhattan, Def Jam Recordings boasts pop superstars Rihanna and Justin Bieber, as well as hip-hop greats LL Cool J, Snoop Dogg and Jadakiss under its management umbrella.

The announcement coincided with Masicka’s music video release of single ‘Pieces‘ featuring Jashii, with the self-proclaimed Genasyde deejay and songwriter still riding the commercial success of his December 2021 debut album 438

Masicka, now based in Miami, dedicated ‘Pieces‘ as a motivational anthem for fans of his music.

“‘Pieces‘ is a song of triumph,” he told Variety, adding, “It’s a celebration of what you have worked hard for and motivates the listeners to keep going. You will be victorious.”
