The British Virgin Islands and Montserrat stand as the only two Caribbean territories without active cases this week, as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to sweep the region.

Even as the region inches closer to a ninth week of stability, surging COVID-19 cases stoke further flames of worry that the usually busy and crowded Christmas period could pose a serious challenge for the Caribbean.

The gap between the region’s active and closed coronavirus cases grows smaller still on Tuesday (December 1), with 23 of the 32 affected countries and territories reporting new cases within the last 24 hours.

As at 8:23 pm Greenwich Meridian Time (GMT), collated data from respective health departments across the region have indicated a combined total of 294,372 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Of that number, some 190,933 cases, or roughly 64.86  per cent, have officially been declared closed. There are currently 103,439 active cases regionally.

The British Virgin Islands also enjoys zero active cases of COVID-19—one of two places in the entire Caribbean currently.

The encouraging figures were largely the result of patients across the Caribbean reporting a full recovery from the infectious disease (185,450 recoveries to date, barring insufficient data from Puerto Rico and Martinique).

In the meantime, the total number of patients who succumbed to coronavirus-related complications has steadily climbed to 5,483.

At the time of publication, only two Caribbean territories have managed to bring their active caseload to zero, namely: the British Virgin Islands and Monserrat.
