The Communications fraternity in Jamaica lost one of its brightest lights in 2025 with the passing of Soleta Thomas, a consummate professional whose career was defined by excellence, integrity, and humanity.
Until her passing following a brief but courageous battle with cancer, Soleta served in the Corporate Communications Department at JPS as Communications Assistant- Media & PR Unit, where she became both a trusted colleague and a respected partner to the media.
For those who worked alongside her, Soleta was more than a communications expert; she was the steady hand behind countless media interviews, the calm presence during high-pressure moments, and the bridge between institution and public. She possessed a rare blend of strategic insight and emotional intelligence, allowing her to manage complex narratives without ever losing sight of the people behind them.
Over the course of her career, Soleta earned a reputation for professionalism that was as unwavering as it was admirable. She approached her work with meticulous care, always prepared, always thoughtful, and always guided by the highest ethical standards.
Media Partners knew they could rely on her for accuracy, clarity, and honesty; colleagues knew they could depend on her for guidance, mentorship, and unwavering support.

Her excellence did not go unnoticed. An award-winning team member, Soleta received several commendations and awards during her 16-year tenure at JPS, which began in the Customer Care Centre, reflecting not only her technical skill, but also her impact on the organisation and the wider communications landscape. Yet, despite her accolades, she remained remarkably humble, more focused on team success than personal recognition.
Her manager, Audrey Williams, Manager – Media & PR, JPS, described her as exceptional in both skill and spirit. “Soleta was the kind of professional every leader hopes to have on their team. She was dependable, thoughtful, and deeply committed to excellence. Beyond her competence, she brought warmth and integrity to everything she did. Our department, and our organisation was better because of her.”
Soleta made significant contributions throughout her career, earning the respect of senior leadership, customers and peers alike. Yet, it was her humility and generosity of spirit that left the most lasting impression.
Shenee Anderson, Brand Experience & Special Projects Officer – JPS, colleague and friend who worked closely with Soleta, reflected on her quiet but powerful influence. “She never needed to be the loudest voice in the room. Her work and presence spoke for themselves. She worked without fuss, supported without being asked, and always made time for others. Working with her was a privilege and an honour. For me, she was beyond a colleague; she is my dear friend, and she is greatly missed.”
She was equally admired within the media fraternity, where she was known for her honesty, professionalism, and respect for journalistic integrity. Media partners, including but not limited to producers, hosts, and advertisers, valued her as a reliable source and a fair partner, someone who understood their role and worked collaboratively to ensure stories and interviews were handled with accuracy and care.

The depth of her impact was evident at her funeral in East Kingston, on January 24, 2025, which was attended by a large gathering of family, friends, colleagues and members of the media. Their presence was a powerful testament to the relationships she built and the esteem in which she was held across sectors. It was not just a farewell, but a collective acknowledgement of a life and career that mattered.
Even in the face of illness, Soleta demonstrated remarkable strength and dignity. She faced her illness with the same quiet courage and professionalism that defined her working life, inspiring those around her in ways that words can scarcely capture. Though her life was cut short, her legacy endures in the standards she upheld, the people she mentored, and the many lives she touched along the way. She will be remembered as a woman who gave voice to institutions, heart to her work, and kindness to all who knew her.
