Top-notch international jockey Javier Castellano came, saw and conquered, piloting Rideallday to victory in the rich Mouttet Mile at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
The US-based Castellano from Venezuela, arguably the best or most accomplished jockey to ride in Jamaica, guided the Phillip Feanny-trained three-year-old colt to a nine-length win, the richest race, in not only Jamaica but the Caribbean, with a total purse money of US$300,000 (J$48m).
The American horse racing Hall of Famer, who has a Kentucky Derby win under his belt in 2023, produced Rideallday with a devastating stretch run and moved away from Legacy Isle, winning in a splendid time of 1:36.40.
Legacy Isle was ridden by Emisael Jaramillo, who, like Castellano, is from Venezuela and now based in the USA. It is the second consecutive year that Legacy Isle finished second, while last year’s winner Funcaandun finished third.
A number of international riders, including American greats Steve Cauthen, Angel Cordero and Johnny Valesquez, have visited Jamaica before, but Castellano rode and won, making him the most decorated international jockey to win a race on Jamaican soil.
