The 2023 World 400m champion Antonio Watson was crowned Jamaica’s National champion for the first time, as did Stacey-Ann Williams, as the four-day JAAA National Junior and Senior Championships concluded on Sunday at the National Stadium.
Watson, looking a little bit heavier than usual, eased home in 44.73 ahead of Delano Kennedy of Uptimum in second with 45.11. Javeir Brown of Swept was third on 45.26 seconds, and Zandrion Barnes of Sprintec ended fourth in 45.30.
Meanwhile, Williams won the women’s 400 title for the first time, clocking 50.33. Leah Anderson fought hard for second in 51.04, with Shana Kay Anderson finishing third in 51.52 seconds.
In the 200m, the absence of Shericka Jackson, 22-year-old Alana Reid copped her first senior National title, winning in a personal best of 22.29. Reid, the National Junior 100m record holder and World Under-20 100m champion, came off the bend in third spot but turned on the afterburners and sped past the battling duo of Lavanya Williams, who was second in 22.44, and defending champion Ashanti Moore, who was third in 22.45.
National 400m Junior Record holder Christopher Taylor won the 200m title, stopping the clock at 20.09, but with an illegal wind of +2.5 it will not be counted as a personal best. He fought off a spirited challenge from another 400m runner stepping down to the 200m, Jevaughn Powell, who was second in 20.14. Roshawn Clarke, also stepping down from his 400m hurdles, was third in a very good 20.28.
