It was yet another victory at Villa Park for Unai Emery’s team as Aston Villa beat Manchester United 2-1 today (December 21).
It is now ten successive wins in the EPL, which now sees the Midlanders in third position and just three points from the top spot.
Morgan Rogers is on fire, and he was on top form today, scoring both goals for his team.
His first, just before half-time, was a beauty and had the Villa fans on their feet. Last season, Rogers scored 14 goals with 15 assists. He will be looking to better that during this campaign.
Manchester United equalised shortly after Rogers’ goal. To be fair, Manchester United made a fight of this game, and with Villa only beating Manchester United once in their previous 26 EPL games at Villa Park, Manchester United would be forgiven for believing they could go on and win today.
But Aston Villa is the in-form team sweeping all before them. The Brazilian Matheus Cunha’s equaliser made it a match.
Manchester United have been plagued by injuries, with Robbie Mainoo out and Ruben Amorim having to juggle players even more so with the upcoming number of Christmas games. It didn’t help that skipper Bruno Fernandes could not come out in the second half due to a thigh injury.
Victory today would have moved Manchester United into fifth position, above Liverpool. The team looks like it will hold down a European spot come the end of the season, a great improvement on last season when it finished fifteenth.
Morgan Rogers was the main man today, and the 23-year-old curled in another stunning goal near the hour mark.
“The most important thing is that today we were nowhere near our best and we still found a way to win, to be determined, to stick in there, not concede and then get the goals.
“I think that’s a sign of a really good team and something within us to have that belief. There are different ways to win a game, and that was a nice one.
“I feel like I’m playing the best I’ve ever played. I’m the most confident, but that’s also within the team. The team is the most confident it’s been since I’ve been here,” said Rogers.
