Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India played host to the semi-final between Australia and South Africa, in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

When these two teams met in the round-robin, South Africa was dominant and won by 137 runs.

This semi-final (November 16) saw a rematch between the old rivals.

South Africa won the toss and decided to bat first.

Quinton de Kock was not able to create his usual magic at the crease, and both he and the other opener, captain Temba Bavuma, were back in the dugout with just 8 runs scored.

The next two wickets fell in quick succession as well, with both Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen sent packing in consecutive overs (10 and 11).

The top order was all dismissed, with none of them scoring more than 10 runs each.

Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller would add stability to the innings and were able to generate almost 100 more runs on the total, before Klaasen was sent packing for 47 runs off 46 balls.

After that dismissal, no real partnership was established at the crease for the South Africans, who would end their innings all out for 212 runs.

David Miller would account for almost half the total, with his team-high knock of 101 runs.

The South African bowling attack would then be charged with defending the paltry score.

The South Africans would not have a breakthrough until over 7 with the dismissal of David Warner.

They would also send Mitchell Marsh back to the pavilion for just one additional run, but did not carry that momentum much farther.

The Australians did not establish any particularly devastating partnerships, but had enough quality batsmen to contribute to making the low score.

With 16 balls and 3 wickets to spare, the Aussies were able to dispatch the South Africans and finished their innings at 215/7.

Man of the Match honours went to opening batsman Travis Head, with a team-high 62 runs, while also taking 2 wickets.

The finals of the tournament are scheduled for Sunday, November 19, at the world’s largest stadium, Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The host nation India will hope to go a perfect 11 for 11 with a win in the finals, while Australia is hoping they can lift the trophy for a record-extending sixth title.
