What once appeared to be a straightforward move is now hanging in the balance as financial challenges at FC Barcelona threaten to derail Marcus Rashford’s hopes of securing a permanent stay in Spain.
After an impressive loan spell, Barcelona hold an option to sign the Manchester United forward for £26 million this summer. However, reports suggest the Spanish giants are struggling to raise the funds and are exploring alternatives, including negotiating a lower fee or extending the loan arrangement for another season.
That proposal is unlikely to appeal to Manchester United, who are reportedly eager to finalise a permanent transfer and move on from the situation.
Barcelona’s financial concerns extend beyond player transfers. The club is still dealing with the soaring costs of renovating the iconic Camp Nou, a project that has exceeded initial budgets and remains unfinished. Although the team returned to the stadium last year, construction work continues, and attendance remains restricted while upgrades are completed.
The rising costs have reportedly left Barcelona searching for additional financing to complete the remaining phases of the redevelopment project, including new VIP sections, an expanded upper tier, and eventually a new roof. Those financial pressures help explain the club’s reluctance to immediately activate Rashford’s purchase clause. Meanwhile, other clubs are keeping a close eye on the situation. Bayern Munich has emerged as a potential destination and is believed to be willing to meet Manchester United’s asking price. However, reports indicate Rashford’s preference remains Barcelona, and he has shown little interest in exploring alternative offers.
Until an agreement is reached, Rashford’s attention is likely to remain on international duty as he prepares for England’s final World Cup warm up match against Costa Rica.
