‘Gallivant‘, the debut travelogue and memoir by Jamaican architect, designer and creative director, Michelle Simone ‘SiiM’ Clarke, made its official entry into the Jamaican literary landscape last week, offering a vibrant blend of humour, reflection, and cultural insight.
At a time when many Jamaicans are reflecting on personal resilience and collective strength, the themes of ‘Gallivant‘ resonate even more deeply. The nation continues to recover from the effects of Hurricane Melissa, and SiiM sees storytelling as a powerful companion in moments like these.
Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett, who delivered the keynote at the launch, praised the memoir as “a narrative about the freedom of self-reinvention, born from having the courage to grow beyond our roots while being shaped by them.”

He noted that Clarke’s Jamaican identity did not restrict her; instead, “her Jamaican roots became her compass.”
According to him, “In tourism, peace is not the absence of conflict; it is the presence of connection. What Simone has done in Gallivant is show us the power of human connection through shared humanity. Tourism today is not only sun, sea, and sand; it is about the desire for new experiences. This book becomes an invaluable tool because it invites us to travel like locals, appreciate unplanned adventures, and hold tight to the roots that give us strength to reach new horizons.”
With her signature wit and an architect’s eye for balance and detail, SiiM takes readers across continents and through intimate moments of revelation, reminding us that exploration, of the world or of the self, is a transformative act.

Siim reflects on Gallivan
“’Gallivant‘ taught me that even when life throws us wildly off course, we can still find or create meaning. Our stories don’t disappear; they wait patiently for us to return to them,” SiiM reflects saying, “Gallivant is an intensely personal meditation on curiosity, identity, and the opportunity for radical change when life, or tragedy, diverts us from our planned path. This book is the blueprint for my life, written 25 years ago and rediscovered last year in my kitchen.”
SiiM’s multidisciplinary interests are present in every chapter. As an architect, she sees structure; as a designer, she sees beauty; and as a storyteller, she sees emotion.

These sensibilities merge to create a narrative that is visually rich, culturally grounded, and emotionally expansive. The book moves effortlessly between humour and introspection, inviting readers to laugh, reflect, and find themselves mirrored in the journey. While the book stands firmly on its literary merit, its release also aligns with a spirit of community upliftment. In honour of the memoir’s themes of compassion and creative nourishment, attendees of the launch event, hosted at the Jamaica Food and Drink Kitchen, raised $175,000 for Mustard Seed Communities towards recovery efforts and the support of young people in their care.
This simple gesture mirrors the heart of ‘Gallivant‘: That every interaction, no matter how small, has the power to impact someone else’s story positively, meaningfully. With its blend of humour, insight, authenticity, and Jamaican soul, ‘Gallivant‘ emerges as a cultural offering at a time when readers are craving meaning and inspiration.
“Gallivant is an invitation to reflect, to discover or rediscover, and to keep moving, especially when the path ahead feels uncharted,” SiiM concluded.
