Dancehall legend Beenie Man asserts his bid for the King of Dancehall throne, hoping to reclaim his position as the undisputed ruler of the genre.

This move follows Vybz Kartel’s triumphant return at the Freedom Street Concert and growing public sentiment that he is the new King of Dancehall.

This debate has continued since the early 2010s when Kartel’s grandeur became obvious to dancehall fans worldwide.

Beenie Man posted a video of the two performing at Reggae SumFest in 2009 where Kartel said, “Beenie man you a king of the dancehall from you come outta yuh madda belly, member dat… mi respect yuh and me honour yuh, yuh give me Breast Specialist, a mi first number one,”

Beenie Man, under that same Instagram post, wrote, “Straight from the horse’s mouth, so weh di war bout? 1 King [crown emoji].”

Fans have taken issue with Beenie Man’s stance on the matter, noting that every dancehall king must relinquish his throne when a new king arises.

“Beenie Man let it gooo… you should have been at Freedom Street to hand over the crown to Kartel. Yuh energy nuh right from December 31,” one commenter wrote under the post.

“King Yellowman (80s-90s), Beenie Man (90s-2000s), Vybz Kartel (2010s to present), and one day Vybz Kartel’s time will be up, such weh di fuss fah?” another wrote.

“That was then and he showed you your respect, such now it the time to give him his flowers, too,” another noted.

The discourse on social media reflects the public’s disappointment with Beenie Man’s tone-deafness and his inability to pass the crown to the new King, Vybz Kartel.

The Dancehall Can’t Stall singer has yet to respond to Beenie Man’s declaration, leaving his fans to have the final say on the matter.
