Red Stripe is spreading holiday cheer with its ‘Beer Gifting’ promotion, recently awarding taxi operator Carlton Wilson a $150,000 supermarket voucher.

Wilson celebrated with his family at Super Shoppers Fair on Washington Boulevard in St Andrew, turning heads during a lively timed shopping spree.

“Bless up!” chanted 62-year-old Wilson as he strolled through the supermarket’s automatic doors.

“I’m very excited to be here today. When I learnt about the promotion, I went straight to 214 Spanish Town Road and bought a six-pack of beer. A few days later, I got a call from Red Stripe Flavours Junior Brand Manager Cavell Robinson to say I won, and I am very grateful,” he added.

Though Wilson chose his preferred supermarket, the brand managers ensured he had the perfect strategy by guiding him through the aisles and helping him set up trolleys in the sections he intended to target just before the clock started.

As Wilson raced through the aisles, store employees cheered him on, reminding him to “remember the meat!” However, despite their encouragement, he missed adding any meat items to his cart before the clock ran out.

“I grabbed the essentials first — naturally, Red Stripe products, followed by large bags of rice, sugar, flour, and cooking oil but I didn’t get meat,” Wilson shared, catching his breath.

With two overflowing shopping carts in just five minutes, Wilson made his way to the checkout counter, boasting a haul that included at least seven boxes of toothpaste, canned goods, cleaning supplies, and more.

As everyone watched the items glide across the checkout scanner, Wilson was pleasantly surprised to find he had spent only $51,577.00. The brand team then allowed him to head back through the aisles and pay the remaining balance. This time, he stocked up on multiple bags of meat, fresh vegetables, and other essentials, ensuring he could comfortably share with his siblings for the holiday season.

Brand Promoter Natsena Dawkins (centre) stepped in to help Carlton Wilson, thrilled with his two overflowing trolleys, to unpack while cashier Latoya Prendergast efficiently checked off the items. To everyone’s surprise, Wilson spent only one-third of the prize fund, leaving room for even more shopping delights. (Photo contributed)

Wilson’s younger sister, Fredericka Henry, who playfully reminded him to get her a bottle of Bailey’s Rum Cream while he shopped, shared the generosity her brother embodies.

“He’s a very simple man — what you see is what you get — but his kindness shines through,” shared Fredericka, smiling. “As soon as he found out he’d won, he started thinking about how he could share everything with our family. If you’re not careful, he’ll give until there’s nothing left for himself.”

For Wilson and his family, this holiday season marks their first Christmas dinner together in years, made even more special by the thoughtful gesture of Red Stripe’s beer brands.

“From our very first conversation, Carlton called me every chance he got, just to make sure he had all the details. Today, we were very excited to watch him stock up for the Christmas season, especially in such an exciting way. Now, he is only one of many winners. Over the last four weeks, we’ve gifted 99 other Jamaicans, and we’re excited to continue celebrating more customers, consumers, and even our team members as the promotion unfolds,” said Red Stripe Flavours Junior Brand Manager Cavell Robinson.

The ‘Beer Gifting’ promotion, running until December 15, offers customers the chance to win a range of prizes, including supermarket vouchers, 65-inch flat-screen TVs, cash prizes, gas vouchers, Courts vouchers, and more. To participate, consumers must purchase four products from the participating brands, such as Heineken, Red Stripe, Red Stripe Flavours, Dragon, Guinness, and Malta.
