Gianluca Prestianni has been suspended for six matches by UEFA following homophobic conduct during Benfica’s Champions League play off against Real Madrid in February.
The incident unfolded during the match in Lisbon, when Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior reported abusive language after an exchange with the 20 year old winger. Play was stopped for 10 minutes as officials addressed the situation.
Prestianni denied making any racist remarks, insisting his words had been misunderstood. However, UEFA’s investigation found him guilty of homophobic abuse. He will serve a total of three matches immediately, including one already completed under a provisional suspension. The remaining three games have been suspended for two years, meaning they will only be activated if he commits another offence during that period.
UEFA has also asked FIFA to extend the suspension worldwide.
The case has once again put the spotlight on abusive conduct in football, with the sport’s governing bodies continuing efforts to crack down on discriminatory behaviour both on and off the pitch.
