President of Beryllium Limited Andre McLean says the firm has improved its security strategies in light of enhanced risks associated with cash management, especially during the holiday season.

The security firm was thrust into the spotlight this year after several of its security guards transporting large sums of cash were attacked by gunmen, some of whom stole or attempted to steal millions in cash.

In response, McLean says Beryllium has been working with the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and its clients to enhance security measures.

“We caution business owners and the general public to take all necessary measures to safeguard their valuable assets as the risk associated with handling cash remains severe. Safeguarding the welfare of our team, clients, and the public remains at the forefront of our business as we continue to conduct high-risk currency services,” McLean said in a statement.

He urged the public to work with the JCF as it investigates previous attacks.

“Information provided this far has proven instrumental in thwarting past and potential criminal activity, demonstrating the tangible impact of collaboration. We believe through continued collaboration and vigilance, we can collectively mitigate potential threats and ensure a safe and secure environment for all throughout the holiday season,” said McLean.

He further urged the public to allow Beryllium team members the necessary space to perform their duties, some of which he says take place under “potentially challenging circumstances”.

The latest Beryllium attack took place in Grey Ground, Manchester, on Monday evening.

Reports are that security guards assigned to the company were attacked while doing a pick-up in the area. They were approached by gunmen who opened fire. The team, reportedly acting on training they received, retaliated and foiled the operation.

One of the gunmen was fatally shot during the exchange.

A suspect is in police custody.

Since the start of the year, Beryllium teams have been attacked in Portmore, St Catherine; Albion, St Thomas; Balaclava, St Elizabeth; Mandeville, Manchester; and Harbour View in the Corporate Area.
