Dennis Brown tops list of 5 Jamaican artistes featured in Rolling Stone’s ‘Greatest Singers of All Time’ list

Jamaica is celebrating another milestone in the entertainment industry with five of the country’s most popular singers making the list of Rolling Stone’s 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.

The list, published on New Year’s Day, features Jamaican icons Bob Marley, Toots Hibbert, Dennis Brown, Luciano and Barrington Levy.

Reggae singer Luciano ranked 143 on the list. The singer, described in the article as dynamic, was highlighted for songs such as Sweep Over My Soul and It’s Me Again Jah.

Too Experienced singer Barrington Levy was ranked 119th on the list. Levy was described in the article as cutting and commanding with international hit songs such as Under Mi Sensi and Black Roses.

Reggae legend Bob Marley was ranked 98th on the list and was highlighted for his use of words and melodies to reflect the struggles of people around the world.

Toots Hibbert was ranked 94th on the list and was described as a reggae pioneer who possessed a ‘rough-edged, fierce voice’ that gave life to songs such as Sweet and Dandy and 54-46 That’s My Number.

Reggae icon Dennis Brown was ranked 67th on the list. Brown was described as one of Jamaica’s smoothest love men ever.

The article commended Brown for his 1981 hit song Sitting and Watching, which Rolling Stone described as dispensing homespun wisdom.

Rolling Stone noted that the artistws were decided on for the list based on their originality, influence, the depth of their catalogue and musical legacy.
