‘Uprising‘, the last studio album released by Bob Marley and The Wailers, turns 45 this year.
To celebrate that milestone, Tuff Gong International released a special, limited “liquid sunshine”-filled vinyl edition of the set.
Initially released by Island Records in June 1980, the remastered set was released five months after Marley’s 80th birthday. It also coincides with the reopening of the Tuff Gong vinyl pressing plant in Kingston, Jamaica.
‘Uprising 45’ was mastered by Dave Cooley at Elysian Masters in Los Angeles. It contains the contemplative Redemption Song, an acoustic anthem inspired by a speech by Pan African icon Marcus Garvey.
It also includes the disco-flavoured ‘Could You Be Loved‘, ‘Coming in From The Cold‘, and the defiant ‘Forever Loving Jah‘.
Marley died just over one year after the release of Uprising, which represented his biggest push to break in the United States, particularly the black market. To help achieve this, he opened for funk/R&B group The Commodores at Madison Square Garden, New York, in September 1980.
Days after that show, Marley collapsed while jogging in Central Park and was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He did one more show, at the Stanley Theatre in Pittsburgh, on September 23, then cancelled the remainder of his tour.
