Young Botswanan sprinter Letsile Tebogo cemented his name in the history books on Thursday (August 8), claiming the country’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s 200-metre finals at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The now decorated 21-year-old stopped the clock in 19.46 seconds ahead of American athletes Kenny Bednarek and compatriot Noah Lyles, who secured silver and bronze in 19.62s and 19.70s respectively.
Tebogo’s effort is the best performance by Botswana at the Olympics, having copped silver through long-distance runner Nijel Amos in the 800m finals at the 2012 London Summer Olympics and bronze in the men’s 4x400m relay at the 2021 Tokyo Games.
