In an economic climate where the cost of living and “school fees” are frequent points of anxiety for Jamaican households, corporate intervention is shifting from a luxury to an absolute necessity for many.

On Thursday, June 11, Burger King Jamaica demonstrated its commitment to filling the gaps by hosting an intimate sensitisation forum at its UWI, Mona branch. The event served as an opportunity for key stakeholders to learn about the Burger King Scholarship Programme this year, which boasts an impressive $14 million in scholarships and bursaries aimed at secondary and tertiary students.

According to Burger King’s Senior Brand Manager, the decision to increase both initial allotments and recurring yearly payouts across the board is a direct response to inflation and the evolving needs of Jamaican families. The brand’s philosophy this year is simple: meet the students and their support networks precisely where they are.

The forum also went beyond financial metrics, focusing heavily on soft skill development. Noted marketer and content creator Joel Nomdarkham stepped into the role of moderator, pivoting the discussion toward the critical skill of self-branding for scholarships and life.

In a highly interactive session, Nomdarkham challenged student stakeholders to deliver impromptu “elevator pitches” to the audience. The exercise designed to build executive presence saw active participation from student representatives spanning primary and secondary institutions, including Campion College, Immaculate Conception High, St. Andrew High School, St. Jago High, Jesse Ripoll Primary, Holy Family Primary, Mona Prep, and Avondale Prep.

The true value of the investment, however, was articulated by the parents and past scholars in attendance.

For Wendy Smith, mother of a recurring Burger King scholar at Immaculate Conception High, Kaylee Smith, the company’s backing has provided vital stability. “Just the cost of living is high so it goes a far way,” Smith noted, adding that the continuity of the recurring scholarship has alleviated annual financial friction. “It’s great to see them give back to the community.

Similarly, Serena Williams, another Burger King scholar parent, highlighted how the award creates breathing room for single-parent households. “It has really been a good thing for me to basically spread funds into other areas. A lot of households are being affected by financial problems and this will really help them to benefit and to focus on their career goals ahead of them,” Williams stated.

Ultimately Burger King expressed that these scholarships are a part of their contribution to national development and a number of past and recurring scholars were on hand to share their stories and advice to younger students. 2025 Burger King Scholar Shantalee Wilson is a prime example. Currently pursuing a double-major equivalent in Mathematics and Education at the University of the West Indies, Wilson is using her platform to tackle Jamaica’s STEM deficit through her work with the STEM Power Foundation.

When you get a scholarship, it tells you that there are people who support you and see your vision,” Wilson explained. She noted that beyond the financial cushion, the psychological boost drives students to maintain high standards, while simultaneously altering the trajectory of entire families. “It just might be that you’re sending a first-generation graduate to college. And so that gives the family hope.

Persons matriculating to high school and university are urged to apply at www.raljm.com/scholarships. As the application window for this year’s scholarships remain open until June 28, the message from the forum is that academic excellence is only half the equation. Burger King is looking for well-rounded, visionary leaders ready to step confidently into the future and to access this year’s scholarship pool.
