American rapper Cardi B, although a lover of dancehall, in a recent interview shared her fear of recording music of the genre.

Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Almánzar, has always showed love for the genre, hosting a Passa-Passa dancehall themed celebration for her 29th birthday last year, with local acts such as Spice, Shenseea, Ding Dong, Kranium, Sean Paul, and Mr Vegas in attendance.

The artiste has also posted videos of herself dancing to the music from the genre.

Dancehall is a popular Jamaican music form that originated in the 1970s and has birthed notable artistes including Shabba Ranks, Vybz Kartel, Sean Paul, Popcaan and Spice.

Speaking with hosts Angela Yee, Gigi Maguire, Stephanie Santiago and Don’t Call Me White Girl on Yee’s Lip Service podcast, the Up artiste shared that she believes dancehall is out of her lane.

“I’m really nervous to do something like that… it would be natural but it’s.., just certain things that you’re not gonna do…it’s like a little bit out of my lane,” she explained.

Admitting that she would also be shy, the hosts, contrary to the star’s belief, unanimously agreed that she would do well, noting that a reggae/dancehall track is one they would expect from her.

The rapper went on to add that, if she does decide to do a dancehall track, she would want to go for a more authentic sound, and would consider a possible collaboration with Spice, whom she praised.

“It’s just like when you’re like out of your lane it’s just like ughh. I want it to be like real or raw. I don’t want it to be like forced or like mainstream[ish],” she shared.

“I always told Spice when I was 13 years old, I told that I made my dad… buy a Ed Hardy shirt because I saw her wear one… and I loved her and I know all her real old a** songs. It’s not even on Apple Music and she knows that, I be singing them sh*ts in her face.”

The artiste dropped her debut album, Invasion Of Privacy back in 2018 and last year announced plans to release her sophomore album in 2022.

Cardi B yesterday, dropped a new track, Hot Sh*t featuring Kanye West and Lil Durk.
