Cavalier SC retained their Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League title, beating Mount Pleasant FA 6-5 on penalties after battling to a 0-0 draw in normal and extra time at the National Stadium on Friday night (May 23).

It was the second consecutive year that Cavalier were beating Mount Pleasant on penalties in what was both teams’ third straight final appearance.

It was a tight, tactical game between the two best teams in the country and although no goals were scored in open play, it was engaging.

Richard King, Adrian Reid, Chad James, Alexavier Gooden, Jeovanni Laing and Jamilho Rigters scored for Cavalier in which Christopher Ainsworth missed the second kick.

For Mount Pleasant, Raheem Edwards, Nicholas Nelson, Jahshaun Anglin, Daniel Green and Fitzroy Cummings scored. Captain Sue-Lae McCalla missed the fourth kick and Clifford Thomas missed in sudden death.

With the outstanding Dwayne Atkinson replaced before the penalty shootout because of injury then top scorer Jalmaro Calvin substituted, it seemed Cavalier would be in trouble.

But the ice-cold King stepped and roofed his shot putting Cavalier on the board. Edwards did likewise for Mount Pleasant before young Ainsworth skied his effort for Cavalier.

Nelson then converted giving Mount Pleasant the advantage and at that point, it seemed they would avenge last year’s defeat.

Reid held his composure and netted for Cavalier as did Anglin for Mount Pleasant as they led 3-2 in the shootout.

Substitute Chad James converted Cavalier’s fourth kick making it 3-3 before the normally reliable McCalla booted his effort high making it all square at 3-3 after four kicks.

Another substitute Gooden rammed home his spot kick for Cavalier and Green converted for Mount Pleasant sending the shootout into sudden death at 4-4 after five kicks.

Defender Laing looking very much like a striker expertly tucked away his penalty for Cavalier as did Cummings for Mount Pleasant making it 5-5.

Rigters of Suriname made no mistake for Cavalier but Mount Pleasant’s Thomas of Haiti, who was man-of-the-match against Montego Bay,  saw his effort hit the bar, handing victory to Cavalier.

It was Cavalier’s fourth win overall, having first won in 1981. They had to wait 40 years for their second in 2021, but now have won their third title in the last five years.

Earlier, Arnett Gardens defeated Montego Bay United 4-2 and claimed third place and booked their spot in the 2025 Caribbean Club Shield. There are the defending Champions.
