Chris Brown’s upcoming concert in South Africa has ignited a fierce debate over the country’s alarming levels of violence against women, with campaigners arguing that hosting the Grammy-winning artiste sends the wrong message given his history of abuse.

Tickets for the concert at Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium, Africa’s largest stadium, sold out in less than two hours, prompting the addition of a second December date. However, this excitement has faced immense backlash from those who oppose Brown’s performance.

Executive director of Women for Change, Sabina Walter, expressed her disappointment. “When I saw that Chris Brown was coming to South Africa, I was shocked and deeply disappointed,” she said. The group has launched a petition to cancel the concert, which has garnered over 20,000 signatures.

“We will not tolerate the celebration of individuals with a history of violence against women,” said Walters, especially in a country grappling with one of the highest rates of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide in the world.

Brown’s infamous 2009 domestic dispute with singer Rihanna, for which he pleaded guilty to assault, has raised questions about his ability to perform in South Africa. Walter described the visa approval for Brown as “concerning and indicative of a systemic failure”, given South Africa’s laws regarding previous convictions.

Despite the controversy, Brown’s fans remain high, with many excitedly preparing for the concert. However, Walter has faced backlash for her opposition, highlighting a societal disconnect regarding violence against women.

“This fight isn’t just about this concert. It’s about changing the narrative in South Africa, where abusers are held accountable,” concluded Walter.
