CIBC FirstCaribbean is celebrating the resounding success of the 2023 Walk For The Cure (WFTC) 5K Run/Walk with a staggering $6 million raised for the benefit of the Jamaica Cancer Society.

The bank, along with its partners, demonstrated an unwavering commitment to supporting cancer organisations across the region.

At the cheque presentation ceremony held at the bank’s Knutsford Boulevard branch on Thursday, January 18, Nigel Holness, the managing director of CIBC, extended heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors and participants for their invaluable contributions. “We owe a debt of gratitude to each and every individual who lent their support to this noble cause,” remarked Holness.

Reflecting on the evolution of WFTC since its inception in 2012, Holness underscored its transformation into the Caribbean’s premier cancer fundraising and education initiative. Noting the remarkable achievement of surpassing J$465 million in funds raised regionally in 2023 alone, Holness highlighted the instrumental role of these funds in advancing patient care, outreach, research, and education initiatives spearheaded by cancer organisations.

Holness shared stories of resilience from last year’s WFTC, including that of a young breast cancer survivor who found solace and support at the event. “We either know someone who has cancer – a friend, a relative, a neighbour- maybe ourselves. Walk For the Cure is both therapeutic and beneficial whether we are running or walking for ourselves or in memory of someone else,” added Holness.

Acknowledging the dedication of the CIBC team and the unwavering support of sponsors, Holness lauded their efforts in fundraising, event coordination, and active participation. A diverse array of sponsors, including Best Dressed Chicken Ltd., Sandals Resort, and The Gleaner Co., among others, were lauded for their contributions in both financial support and active engagement in the event.

Michael Leslie, acting executive director of the Jamaica Cancer Society, expressed gratitude for the monumental contribution: “This remarkable sum will undoubtedly make a significant difference in the lives of those battling cancer,” said Leslie.
