Reggae Girlz head coach Hubert Busby has been suspended by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), with the organisation writing to FIFA seeking a full investigation of the matter involving the former Vancouver Whitecaps coach and former player Malloree Enoch.
“We will await the results of this FIFA investigation. We do not want to make permanent decisions until we have the facts. At the same time, we have to ensure that our women and girls are protected by those who lead them,” said JFF President Micheal Ricketts in a statement Tuesday (November 2).
Busby Jr has been accused of sexual misconduct while recruiting Enoch between September 2010 and October 2011.
Details of allegations against the Reggae Girls head coach emerged last week in The Guardian newspaper. In the story that was published, Enoch alleged that Busby Jr used his position as head coach to coerce her into having sex with him.
She claimed he made several overtures including inviting her to stay in his hotel room on several occasions. On one of those occasions, she said she stayed in his room for three nights but he did not make any sexual advances.
“He was on all fours fully on the bed. He was definitely aroused. He tried to kiss and touch me. The light was not on but I don’t think he had his shirt on. I had to negotiate to get him off the bed. I told him I wasn’t interested,” Enoch recalled.
However, on another occasion, she told The Guardian: “When we got back to the hotel he again didn’t have a room reserved for me. I had to stay in his room. This particular night there were two beds and I laid in my own bed and he made his way to my bed and at some point was standing over the top of me.
“He was on all fours fully on the bed. He was definitely aroused. He tried to kiss and touch me. The light was not on but I don’t think he had his shirt on. I had to negotiate to get him off the bed. I told him I wasn’t interested,” she told The Guardian.
“He was using this power because he had something that I wanted. I was very uncomfortable. I was resistant to it and he tried to pursue it and pursue it and then he got pissed off and went over to his own bed and went to sleep,” Enoch added.
Following several emails sent by players including Enoch to the club’s administrators, the Whitecaps hired an ombudsman to interview the players. They subsequently decided not to renew Busby’s contract citing that it was in the best interest of the club to make a coaching change of the women’s team programme.
Major League Soccer (MLS) announced last week that it would initiate an investigation into how the Whitecaps handled the situation in 2011.
