Dancehall superstar Popcaan took to his social media on Monday (May 19) to speak out against the violent acts towards women and children.

“This morning, I came to raise awareness of some things that have been happening in Jamaica lately. I don’t really like the direction things are going, especially about raping a nine-year-old and then killing her,” Popcaan said.

Born Andre Sutherland, the musician came out with this statement in light of the inhumane acts against Jamaica’s children and youth, who are the future of the nation, including Kelsey Ferrigon, a nine-year-old grade three student of the St John’s Primary School who was raped and strangled on May 9.

Ferrigon’s alleged killer, Glovanni Ellis, otherwise called ‘Coolie Man’, was murdered in a police shootout in Clarendon following the incident.

Also, a woman, particularly a nurse, was assaulted and stomped upon by a businessman in St Andrew, leaving swelling and bruises on her body.

“I feel like we should pay more attention to these things, and we must have more dialogue with each other in the community so we can protect the children and even adults. I saw a man walking in a nurse’s head.

“If I go apply for a licensed firearm, they are not going to give me a licensed gun, though I own so much property in Jamaica, but them so-called outstanding citizens that they have a step in a nurse’s head and abuse a nurse who is also here to look after the people and the kids, so I’m just letting you know that the nation needs to be more serious about these situations and eradicate these rapists that are in our society and our surroundings like pestilence,” he added.
