The St Catherine South Police, assisted by the dean of discipline of a high school in the division, have seized several weapons at the educational institution.

The seizure was made following a search at the institution after several items, including knives, scissors and coconut drops infused with ganja, among other contraband were confiscated. Two of the students have since been arrested and charged for the marijuana.

The St Catherine South Police has been proactively engaging schools in the division as part of the violence interruption strategy to prevent violent encounters among students. Since the resumption of face-to-face classes early this month, there have been several violent incidents at schools across Jamaica in which students have been injured with at least two fatalities.

Swift action by the police

Upon hearing the news, several persons took to Facebook praising the police for their swift action.

Said Lisa Allen: “Wow, I know we use to have our little squabbles at school, but nothing of this nature. Children sure does live what they learn, they are a reflection of society believe it or not. Fix it Jesus it is a serious pandemic. The mind the mind oh lord it’s a powerful weapon.”

Paul Johnson heaped praises on the lawmen, saying, “Kudos to JCF/JDF… this is a good look Children should go to school and feel safe. They’re in school to learn, get an education for the development of self, communities, and country”.

Johnson added: “The seizure of these devices indicates that the presumption of children going to school to get an education is rather confounding… it appears that schools are now the battle fields, therefore, children have to be prepared to defend themselves. Anyway, this is a good move by the ministry of education to allow JCF/JDF in protecting our children in school. Kudos to all… good job.”

Rusheda Brown said: “Officers i know you all are doing a great job and most of us grateful appreciate the hard work you’ll putting out…But in these cases list the name of the schools that you found these things so parents can open their eyes on them kids…don’t pretty it up and say ‘A High school in the division’. These kids getting out of hand with these things now, killing other innocent people kids. I wonder if these kids are under spell or something…God knows.”

Kim Tracey remarked: “OMG! Those children are going on a battlefield, not an educational institution… They should be enrolled in the army or in some combative situation. What a sad life. Their future looks gloomy smh…”

Teyonce Tyson called for parents to search their children’s school bags for weapons, adding, “sad to see this how this still happing in schools across Jamaica, not shocking at all some schools stop searching bags.”
