There were 88 new COVID-19 cases reported shortly before the return of back-to-school, with Kingston and St Andrew accounting for 48 cases.

According to the latest report from the Ministry of Health and Wellness, between August 29 and September 4, new cases were reported in nine parishes islandwide, namely Kingston and St Andrew, Manchester, St Ann, St Catherine, St Elizabeth, St James, St Mary, Trelawny and Westmoreland.

St Catherine had the second highest number of reported cases with 19, while Westmoreland had six. There were no cases reported in Clarendon, Hanover, Portland, and St Thomas.

While there was an increase in new cases compared to the previous week, when 55 were reported, the country’s seven-day positivity rate decreased from 17.2 per cent to 13.2 per cent. This means fewer people, when tested, had a positive result.

There was also the confirmation of eight deaths as being COVID-related. The deaths are said to have occurred between June 2021 and November 2022. However, they are just being confirmed as pndemic-related deaths. Additionally, there were four coincidental deaths reported, meaning the patient had the virus but died due to other underlying illnesses.

On the flip side, seven patients recovered from the virus. There are now 76 active cases of COVID-19 in Jamaica.

The Ministry of Health continues to urge citizens to protect themselves from the virus. Health Minister Christopher Tufton has also said that there is no intention to reinstate lockdown protocols and urged citizens to practice sanitisation, mask-wearing, and get vaccinated.

The number of COVID-19 cases for each parish is as follows:
