Member of Parliament for St Thomas Eastern Dr Michelle Charles has announced that crime and violence have been trending downward in her constituency.

She made the announcement during her contribution to the State of Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, 10 December.

Charles, who quoted statistics, stated that 46 major crimes had been recorded across the four police jurisdictions that encompass her constituency (Morant Bay, Port Morant, Golden Grove, and Bath) as of 8 December. This, she said, represents a decline compared to the 74 recorded in 2023.

Meanwhile, three murders were recorded in the constituency up to 8 December, a decline compared to the seven reported last year. Similarly, there has been a downward trend with six fewer incidents this year compared to the 26 reported last year.

“So, Madam Speaker, as St Thomas Eastern develops, we see crime and violence trending downwards. Let me acknowledge and appreciate the hard work and sacrifices made by the police department. Your commitment to keeping our community safe is invaluable,” Charles said.

The parish of St Thomas has seen an overall 10 per cent decline in serious crimes such as murder, shooting, rape, and break-ins compared to last year.
