Cynthia Erivo was presented with the Cultural Icon Award at Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood (BWH) ceremony for her outstanding performances in the film industry.
The Wicked star, Erivo, who received an Oscar nomination for her role as Elphaba, was given the award by actress and singer Keke Palmer on Thursday, February 27.
During an interview with Essence, she expressed her joy at being able to be a positive inspiration to other black women who are able to resonate and see her impact.
“It’s been really wonderful; it feels really wonderful to be a part of that conversation, and I’m glad to be able to inspire that, and I’m looking forward to seeing what that brings to the world. I can’t wait to see how many fierce, fabulous women step out into the open as themselves, and I just want everyone to keep going,” she said.
Cynthia also took to social media to share snippets of the ceremony and highlight her upcoming projects and new single titled Replay.
“Welcome to another journey in my life. If you know me, you know I pour my heart out. If you’re new here, welcome; sometimes I lay my heart on my sleeve for you. Music is my love. Music is my second language. Music is a way for you to get to know me, all the joys and pains and everything in between. I am so excited and grateful that I get to share a lot more with you.
“Over the next few months, you are going to get pieces of my heart. I’m honoured to share it. The first piece is Replay, and it comes to you with love today,” she added.
