Dancehall deejay Donald ‘Danny English’ Cox, known for his 2002 hit Party Time, died at 54.
Reports state that he passed away on Thursday, 23 January, at the Kingston Public Hospital from a diabetes-related illness.
Born in Kingston, England, he began his music career as a teenager, influenced by artistes such as Buju Banton, Shaggy, and Tuffy Melody. His deep voice became his signature, separating him from his contemporaries.
The song, Party Time, which gained international recognition, was set to the Diwali Riddim, a production by Jamaican producer Steven ‘Lenky’ Marsden. The riddim, released in 2002, also featured in global hits such as Sean Paul’s Get Busy, Missy Elliott’s Pass That Dutch, and Rihanna’s debut single Pon de Replay.
English was celebrated within the dancehall community for his humility and talent.
Fans and dancehall colleagues have taken to social media to share tributes and condolences.
