After eight months of exclusive globe-trotting interviews with an array of celebrity actors, designers, entrepreneurs, and headline makers, popular television talk host Dewight Peters hits the pause button on his wildly successful eponymous lifestyle show on Television Jamaica this Sunday (June 27).
The exciting season finale of Rolling with Deiwght Peters is slated to feature revealing sitdowns with iconic politician and publisher Mike Henry, world-renowned social historian Professor Verene Shepherd and SAINT’s Paris-based fast-rising Nigerian supermodel Tomiwa.
With a political record of over three decades of unbroken service as a Member of Parliament, the reliably opinionated Henry will reflect on a historic and occasionally controversial career in government and opposition.
Henry’s longtime staunch advocacy for reparations from Britain for the atrocities endured by Jamaica and the Caribbean from the centuries-old slave trade will also be a point of intense discussion.
Chiming in on reparations too, will be Peters’ second guest Verene Shepherd, former Professor of Social History at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona who also serves as the Director of the Centre of Reparation Research at the tertiary institution.
The multi-hyphenate academic, who echoes Henry’s call for social and fiscal accountability for the vagaries wrought by slavery, will give insightful context to the ongoing reparations conversation.
Also up for televised tête-à-tête is red-hot SAINT star Tomiwa who Zooms in from Paris to talk about her rapid ascension up the model ranks, having within the last two months worked with French luxury fashion brands Louis Vuittion, Chloe and Longchamp.
Discovered just three years ago on social media by Peters, the stunning Nigerian beauty went from being a nursing graduate in her African homeland to an exclusive runway booking for premier fashion house Celine.
Peters brand powering milestone in Jamaican television
“I am extremely grateful for the enormous success for this first season and the fact that it could be realised during the worst pandemic and economic downturn in history,” the usually positively upbeat Peters shares with Our Today.
Peters’ trademark infectious optimism and attitude are genuine factors that would have contributed to the show’s success, helping to woo blue-chip corporate sponsors in a time of such uncertainty. Digicel, JDIC, Supreme Ventures, Ashley Furniture/COURTS, and others went on the journey with Peters.
The show set new standards not only in terms of breadth and dynamics of guests but was ground-breaking in its 36 episodes ‘roll out’ for this first season.
As an independent producer, this is unprecedented and also validates the popularity of the show. Whether the premier of an island-state, a Hollywood star or a multi-platinum international—the guests were varied and intriguing.
A much-heralded cop was Peters’ securing the first out-of-US exclusive interview for history-making Jamerican nurse Sandra Lindsay, who was the first person in the United States to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
As he prepares to wind up his runaway hit TV show for a brief hiatus, Peters is mightily pleased with the generous reception he received from local and international viewers.
He told Our Today further,“It’s been an absolute amazing season for the show, with over 36 episodes produced, and a true labour of love for me giving a platform for a diverse cast of Jamaican and Caribbean success stories who have raised the bar across the world.”
Peters is elated for the guest line-up for Sunday’s show given the currency of the social discourse it gives in the topical era of Black Lives Matter.
“Between Mike’s milestone political life and his passionate pursuit for reparations which he shares with an equally ardent Verene who has long championed reparations too, they will offer viewers strong arguments of the justification for reparations, and why black pride is important and should be celebrated,” he said.
The season finale of Rolling with Deiwght Peters airs this Sunday at 4:00 pm on TVJ and repeats on Wednesday at 1:05 pm.
