Rain robbed the West Indies Women of a chance at victory in the first of three one-day internationals (ODIs) against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Friday (January 28).

Between rain delays, Deandra Dottin’s magnificent 100 and a half century from Hayley Matthews had powered the West Indies to 234-3 from 45.3 overs.

When the innings was declared closed after yet another interruption for rain, Deandra Dottin was not out 150 off 158 balls with 18 fours and four sixes. At the other end, Shemaine Campbelle was unbeaten on seven.

Dottin’s 150 was her third ODI hundred and the second-highest individual score by a West Indian woman after Stafanie Taylor’s 171 off 137 balls against Sri Lanka Women in Mumbai in 2013.

She and compatriot Hayley Matthews put the West Indies in a position of strength with a third-wicket partnership of 153 runs after Captain Stafanie Taylor had retired hurt for 12 at 60-2. Matthews made 51 from 63 balls.

The repeated interruptions meant that South Africa was set a revised target of 204 off 29 overs based on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.

South Africa began the case well, reaching 41-1 before Matthews (2-27) and Karishma Ramharack (2-18), triggered a mini-collapse that saw the home side slump to 87-5 off 17.4 overs before the rains came and forced the abandonment.

The dangerous Tazmin Brits scored 32 off 37 balls to top score for the South Africans.

The second match in the series is set to be played on Monday at the same venue.
