
Eltham High and Vauxhall High wreaked havoc in Zone B, beating the fancied pair of STATHS and Calabar High, while Jamaica College and Charlie Smith scored identical 2-1 wins over Excelsior High and Hydel High In Zone A as the ISSA Wata Manning Cup quarterfinals kicked off last Saturday (December 6).
Eltham High, who are proving to be the surprise package of the season, turned in another giant-killing act, beating a STATHS team many considered to be one of the favourites, having reached the semi-final and final every other year.
Eltham High are now top of Zone B on goal difference, ahead of Vauxhall High, which clipped Calabar’s wings 1-0. Vauxhall, coached by Kyle Butler, are playing in the quarterfinal for the first time in its history. They are coming off a big 3-1 win over St George’s College in the second round and held JC to a 1-1 draw in the first round to prove that they can match the big boys.
In Zone A, JC battled hard for a 2-1 win over Excelsior High in a close encounter at Stadium East. They are joined on three points by Charlie Smith, who also secured a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Hydel High.
Jamoy Dennis (15th) and Duwayne Burger (88th) scored for JC, while Kimarly Scott (45+3) netted for Excelsior.
Meanwhile, Mario Nelson gave Hydel the lead in the 30th minute, but Charlie Smith roared back with an own goal in the 61st minute by Damari Bowen, and Neyo Drummond struck in the 64th minute to seal the win.
The second set of games will be played on Tuesday with STATHS tackling Calabar in the first encounter at Stadium East before JC meeting Charlie Smith.
In a double header at Spanish Town Prison Oval, Eltham take on Vauxhall, and Hydel play Excelsior High.
