VertiCast has announced the end of the English Premier League (EPL) being shown on CSport App, cable channels, and free-to-air television channels.
“After delivering the excitement of the Premier League to fans across the Caribbean, VertiCast Media’s term as the broadcast rights holder for the Premier League has concluded. We are proud to have made Premier League matches available regionally and, for the first time, to the widest possible audience through the CSport App, cable channels, and free-to-air television channels,” VertiCast said in a release on Tuesday.
VertiCast said in a social media post on Tuesday that subscribers would get their refund.
VertiCast had been having issues showing EPL games across its platforms for months, leading to subscribers taking to social media to voice their disappointment and asking for their money back.
In April, VertiCast announced that it had filed an anti-competitive lawsuit against Digicel Jamaica, Cable and Wireless Jamaica, and Columbus Communications Jamaica in the Supreme Court for allegedly restricting access to its subscriber television channel.
Verticast then applied for leave in the Supreme Court for a Judicial Review of sanctions imposed by the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica in response to a Notice of Breach, which was served on April 8.
No EPL games were being aired during these legal proceedings.
Also in April, Delroy Howell, chairman of the VertiCast Media Group, told Our Today that the CSport App had resumed the broadcast of EPL games, following several months of streaming challenges.
Howell announced then that EPL games through the app are back on for good. “It’s going to be an interesting season,” Howell said then.
And for a time, the games were back on.
When asked in April about the likelihood of customer refunds for the last three months of subscriptions, Howell had said there would be “incentives for subscribers”.
VertiCast said in its release on Tuesday: “While we acknowledge the distribution challenges encountered during this period, we remain committed to our mission of bringing top-tier sports content to viewers across the region.
“We are dedicated to promoting and advocating for a commercially level playing field within the Caribbean, ensuring that our partners continue to receive the content they deserve.
“We extend our sincere thanks to our cable partners and subscribers for their support. Looking ahead, we are excited to continue delivering compelling sports content live on CSport.”
Now that is some finality to the fate of EPL at Verticast. Football enthusiasts will be crushed that they won’t have a reliable way to view their games three days before the 2024/25 EPL season starts.
At least subscribers will get their money back.
