Former Family Matters actor Darius McCrary is staying behind bars at least for now.
The 47-year-old, best known for playing Eddie Winslow on the hit ’90s sitcom, was denied bail during his first court appearance Wednesday in Southern California.
McCrary has been in a San Diego area jail for the past 10 days after US Customs and Border Protection agents picked him up on October 5 while he was trying to cross into Mexico. He was wanted in Michigan on a felony warrant tied to unpaid child support and a missed court date.
During the hearing, the judge decided McCrary was too much of a flight risk to be released. Despite initially insisting he could represent himself in court, McCrary was ultimately assigned a public defender to help handle his case.
He now faces extradition to Michigan within the next month, where he’s expected to appear in court on November 14.
What McCrary was doing near the border in the first place is still a little fuzzy. According to prosecutors, his agent said he was in Tijuana looking into real estate. His lawyer, however, painted a different picture, saying McCrary was there for a charitable housing project.
A representative for the actor offered yet another explanation, claiming it was all a misunderstanding. They said McCrary ended up across the border by mistake while trying to meet someone involved in the Esperanza program, the charity mentioned by his legal team.
Whatever the reason, McCrary now has a legal fight ahead of him back in Michigan. For now, though, the former TV star remains in custody far from the sitcom days that made him famous.
