The international day of celebrating father is just a day away. Have you already decided what will be done for dad?

Although father absenteeism is prominent in societies across the world, including Jamaica, there are still many who are present and involved in their children’s life.

As we begin to prepare for the observance of Fathers’ Day, figures that should be celebrated all year round, here are songs in tribute to your father or someone who has been like a father to you.

8. I Learned From You

This record was done by Disney Channel character Hannah Montana and her father Billy Ray Cyrus.

The father-daughter duo sang about their relationship and the lessons they have taught each other. Miley Cyrus, who played Hannah Montana, sings the first chorus which talks about lessons of strength and self-care.

7. Your Daddy Loves You

American poet, Gil Scott-Heron wrote this track for his daughter. From a father speaking to his daughter, this song tells the story of unending love.

6. Daddy

Written for her debut solo studio album Dangerously In Love, Daddy, as Beyonce explained, was inspired by the devotion and the loyalty her father/then-manager, Mathew Knowles, had towards his family members.

The song, not originally intended for the album, was included after the delayed release of Dangerously In Love.

5. Daughters

American rapper Nas dedicated this track to his daughter Destiny Jones. Released in her teen years, Nas on this track talks to fathers with daughters.

Not dismissing the value of sons, Nas details his relationship with his daughter, mentioning past public controversy and spouts that he only wants the best for her.

4. Good Father

Dedicating the track to ‘good fathers’, Vybz Kartel highlights the few but existing good fathers who work hard for their children.

He also encourages the men to spend time with their children as it will aid them in their grooming, value system and morals.

3. Original Daddy

With father absenteeism being a prominent issue on the island, Konshens, like Vybz Kartel, in this 2015 song highlights the ‘real fathers’ who are present and actively involved in their children’s life.

The singjay noted that becoming a father is perhaps the greatest joy and encourages fathers to remain involved in their child’s life.

2. Daddy Lessons

Released in 2016, Daddy Lessons from the singer’s sixth studio album Lemonade, is about her upbringing in Texas and the lessons her father taught her.

Although a complicated relationship, Beyonce sings about her father Matthew, telling the world he taught her to be strong and always stand up for herself.

She also sings of her father dying. This could be a metaphor for her parents’ divorce back in 09′ as he still very much alive.

1. Dance With My Father

Perhaps the most popular song about fathers on this list, Luther Vandross’ Dance With My Father is both a heartwarming and heartbreaking song. A tribute to his late father, Vandross, with the help of Richard Max, penned this tune shortly after the singer suffered a stroke, dying two years later.

One of the most moving memories of his father, who died when he was a child, was when he danced with the kids within the household, which is where the idea for the song developed.

Dance With My Father was released in 2003.
