The calls continue to grow, so the plan to sell a stake in the World Cup has been overwhelmingly rejected.

The Football Association of Wales has now come out and said that FIFA President Gianni Infantino must go after the number of controversies surrounding World Cup 2026 and his continued lack of judgement.

Infantino could claim that World Cup 2026, held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, was a great success, but then he overreached. His position is now untenable, and he may soon be gone because most of world football has little faith in him.

 A statement read: “The Football Association of Wales hereby confirms its withdrawal of support for the candidature of Mr Gianni Infantino for re-election as FIFA President for the 2027-2031 term.

“The recent failure in good governance, processes, leadership values, stakeholder management, communications and sound judgement have led us to a position where Mr Infantino has lost the confidence of the FAW to remain at the helm of world football. Failing to put the best interests of football first is a failure we cannot accept”.

The Caribbean, which is part of CONCACAF, has also called on Infantino to do the right thing and step down. So has European giant UEFA. The English FA is expected to call for Infantino’s resignation.

Arab countries, Kuwait and Qatar, want him to stay in place and focus on making money

The English FA has said it has lost confidence in Infantino.

Gianni Infantino, who has held the presidency since 2016, succeeded Sepp Blatter.

Even Infantino’s pal President Trump is distancing himself, saying he knew nothing of the plan to sell a $4 billion stake in the World Cup to private investors. Infantino offered an inducement of $40 million to all FIFA nations provided they get behind the plan.

UEFA wrote, “ The proposal was unanimously rejected by UEFA’s national associations and by many other federations and confederations of all sizes around the world whose job it is to protect football.

“We cannot keep going on like this with secret schemes on fast-track timescales cooked up by faceless individuals and of dubious benefit to the game. We must identify those responsible and hold them to account.

“ The current FIFA leadership has not only lost UEFA’s confidence but also that of many other members of the football family. The shabby, back-room opaque deal he hatched and tried to force through was anything but transparent.”

Can Infantino survive? It doesn’t look good. There is momentum growing from Europe to see the back of Infantino. There might very well be a vote of no confidence at an emergency FIFA Congress.

Support for Infantino is waning. Self-respect may see him fall on his sword and take the decision himself to resign.

Too many people are saying he is unfit to run world football.
