A former IT specialist at the Jamaica Observer was shot dead by his wife in Florida, USA on Saturday.

The man has been identified as Rohan Malcolm, who former colleagues at the newspaper described as “friendly” and “down to earth”.

Malcolm has been living in the United States for approximately 10 years.

Malcolm’s wife Denise is now facing a premeditated murder charge over the killing at the couple’s Coral Springs home on Saturday, August 31.

Denise Malcolm (seen in this police mugshot) was arrested for killing Malcolm inside their Coral Springs home in Florida on Saturday, August 31, 2024.

Media reports said that a boy made the initial 911 call, reporting that a man had been shot at a home in the 10500 block of Northwest 43rd Street around 6:30 pm on Saturday.

When officers arrived, they ordered two minors to exit the home and heard a gunshot before a woman also exited, police said.

The circumstances around the killing were not released.

“There is a profound difference between what is legally permissible and what is morally palatable. While we at Stand Up for Jamaica acknowledge that Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness is technically within his rights to accept the $28.6 million salary adjustment under the public sector compensation review, we must challenge the judgment behind the decision,” the organisation said.
