Former National player Rudolph Austin is expected to be named head coach of Portmore United for the upcoming season following the sudden departure of Davion Ferguson.

In early June, it was revealed that Mount Pleasant FA would not renew the contracts of head coach Theodore Whitmore and his coaching staff, which included Ferguson when it expired in July.

Whitmore was replaced by veteran Harold Thomas. Then later in June, the promising Ferguson was given the head coaching position at Portmore United, replacing the departed Phillip Williams now at Dunbeholden FC.

Ferguson — who is also the head coach of multiple-time Manning Cup champion Jamaica College — then promised to bring back the glory day at Portmore.

But in a shocking U-turn, Ferguson has left Portmore United for a reunion with Whitmore who was also shockingly rehired as head coach at Mount Pleasant with Thomas returning to his duty as director of youth football at Mount Pleasant.

Now, an impeccable source close to the Portmore United set-up told Our Today that the club will be promoting from within and former Reggae Boyz captain Austin will be elevated to the head coaching position.

Austin, who turned 39 in June, has been playing as a central midfielder for Portmore after returning from his overseas stints that saw him ply his trade in Norway, England and Denmark.

Efforts to reach Clive Marshall proved futile as calls to his cell phone went unanswered.

Austin, a hard-tackling player, made his debut for Portmore United before moving on to SK Brann in Norway where he earned 90 caps between 2008 and 2012.

He then joined Leeds United in England playing 101 times between 2012 and 2015. Austin then moved to Denmark with Brondby for two years before joining Esbjerg in 2017 before his contract ended in 2021.

He returned home to Portmore United in 2020 playing 50 times, scoring twice from his defensive role.

Austin represented Jamaica 84 times with seven goals.
