Opposition Leader Mark Golding has threatened to take legal action against Deputy House Speaker Heroy Clarke for allegedly making defamatory statements in a WhatsApp group about his wife and the origin of their relationship.

Golding’s attorneys at the law firm Hart Muirhead Fatta, in a letter addressed to Clarke on Friday, June 7, said the statements were made by Clarke in a WhatsApp group consisting of some 300 members.

“Your statements have disparaged Mr Golding in his character and reputation as Leader of the Opposition, a former minister in the Government of Jamaica, an attorney-at-law, an investment banker, and as a businessman, have severely injured and damaged him in his credit and business, and have brought him into public scandal, odium, and contempt, thereby causing considerable distress and embarrassment to him. Those statements have also caused reputational damage to Mr Golding,” the firm said.

His attorneys are now requesting that Clarke provide a written apology to Golding in a newspaper of islandwide circulation.

Similarly, they are requesting that the Deputy Speaker confirm in writing not to publish or cause to be published any defamatory statements concerning Golding and enter into his discussions regarding the terms of settlement of Golding’s claims against him for damages for defamation.

Clarke is required to complete the requests by Monday, June 10, by 4:00 pm.
