Newcastle United shook off their weekend setback with a commanding 4-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise today (October 1), picking up their first Champions League victory of the 2025-26 campaign and their first away win in the competition.
The Magpies looked sharp from the opening whistle in Brussels, clearly eager to bounce back after their dramatic loss to Arsenal. The opener came early, with Sandro Tonali latching onto a loose clearance and firing a volley that deflected off Nick Woltemade to leave Union’s keeper with no chance.
Despite being Champions League newcomers, Union SG didn’t fold. Nick Pope was called into action to keep out a dangerous effort from Adem Zorgane midway through the first half. But just before the break, Newcastle struck again.
Anthony Elanga won a penalty, and Anthony Gordon coolly dispatched it.
Union pushed back in the second half with chances from Anan Khalaili and Niang, but Pope stayed solid. Newcastle then tightened their grip when VAR spotted a handball in the box, and Gordon stepped up once more to slot home his second penalty of the night.
Harvey Barnes rounded off the evening with a composed finish late on, putting the result beyond doubt and getting Newcastle’s European campaign properly up and running after an opening loss to Barcelona.
