Sports Minister Olivia Grange has congratulated Jamaican international footballer Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw after she was voted the 2024 Women’s Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers Association (FWA).

The FWA made this announcement on Friday, May 3.

The Manchester City player secured 53 per cent of the votes, with her teammates Alex Greenwood and Yui Hasegawa both securing third and fourth place, respectively.

Shaw is the second player for Manchester City to have won the coveted award. She follows former Manchester City striker Nikita Sterling, who won the award in 2019.

“Hearty congratulations to Reggae Girl, Khadija Monifa ‘Bunny’ Shaw, for being voted the 2024 Women’s Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers Association. We are so proud of Bunny and happy for her. She thoroughly deserves the prestigious prize following her superb performance which made her Manchester City’s women’s record goal scorer. It is such a pity that she will not see out the season for her club because of her injury but we hope for her full recovery. Bunny Shaw, our big baller,” Grange said.

Shaw is currently recuperating from foot surgery following an injury she sustained in a Manchester City Women’s match against West Ham United last week.

The player has enjoyed a remarkable season, having secured 21 goals in 18 league appearances.

Manchester City’s Phil Foden was also voted the FWA 2024 Footballer of the Year. Both Shaw and Foden will be honoured at the Footballer of the Year dinner in London on Thursday, May 16.
