The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) and the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) are now exploring new areas of collaboration on enhancing port and border security in Jamaica.

The two government port security arms convened a joint security meeting last week focused on enhancing port and border security in the interest of national security. During this meeting, both the JCA and the PAJ reaffirmed their long-standing partnership in border security.

The high-level engagement brought together representatives from both organisations to discuss combined security initiatives, review existing cooperation frameworks, and identify opportunities to further strengthen operational alignment across Jamaica’s ports and borders.

Central to the discussions was the shared objective of safeguarding trade, travel, and maritime operations while improving efficiency and resilience within the national security architecture.

The two entities have worked closely on key modernisation initiatives, including the Non-Intrusive Inspection System (NIIS). This partnership has delivered modern, high-capacity scanning machines equipped with improved technologies, significantly enhancing Jamaica’s ability to detect and deter illicit activities while facilitating legitimate trade.

Collaboration has also extended to the ongoing implementation of the Port Community System (PCS), a transformative platform designed to streamline information sharing and coordination among port stakeholders. During the meeting, both JCA and PAJ presented their respective security architectures, outlining current capabilities, strategic priorities, and emerging challenges.

These presentations formed the basis for in-depth discussions on potential areas for deeper collaboration, ranging from intelligence sharing and risk management to coordinated operational responses and capacity building. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to a clear way forward, with both organisations agreeing to support each other more closely in executing their security mandates.

By leveraging each other’s strengths and aligning strategies, Customs and the Port Authority aim to deliver stronger national security outcomes and ensure Jamaica’s ports and borders remain secure, efficient, and internationally competitive.
