In a recent address to the National People’s Congress, Chinese Education Minister Huai Jinpeng spoke of the importance of nurturing ‘new quality productive forces’ as a cornerstone for the nation’s comprehensive modernisation drive.

This visionary concept, attributed to General Secretary Xi Jinping, champions the reform of the science, technology, education, and mathematics (STEM) system alongside a revitalised talent cultivation mechanism. It is against this backdrop of national ambition, that Guangxi Normal University (GXNU) in Guilin positions itself not just as an educational institution, but as a vibrant cradle for innovation and cultural integration.

Tracing its lineage back to the early 20th century, they have navigated the vicissitudes of history with education to academic excellence and social responsibility. What began as a teacher training school has flourished into a multi-faceted institution, offering a diverse array of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across the arts, sciences, and humanities since its inception in 1932.

During a press conference held on the campus, esteemed members of the GXNU community — including Wang Dong, Deputy Director of the Information Centre; Sun Zhonghui, Deputy Party Secretary of International Culture and Education; and Huang Wentao, Vice-President of the university — shared insights into how the university is aligning with the national directive to foster a new generation of innovators and thought leaders. They highlighted the university’s commitment to enhancing the educational landscape through robust scholarship programmes across four categories, designed to attract and nurture talent from across the globe.

This commitment was vividly illustrated through a captivating cultural showcase, reflecting GXNU’s role as a melting pot of international camaraderie and cultural exchange. The performances, ranging from a spirited dragon dance by international European students to the traditional dance of the Yao by Chinese students, and including contributions from Thai and Indonesian students, exemplified the university’s ethos of mutual respect and understanding. Such events are emblematic of GXNU’s broader mission to foster a community where diverse cultures and ideas can flourish in harmony.

The international student body at GXNU, predominantly hailing from ASEAN countries and representing 81 per cent of the international student population, reflects the university’s appeal as a hub for students seeking both academic excellence and a welcoming, inclusive environment. This demographic detail not only highlights GXNU’s strategic importance in the region but also aligns with Huai Jinpeng’s emphasis on the transformation of demographic dividends into talent dividends.

The press conference also served as a platform for key figures such as Yang Feng, Secretary of the Party Committee of International Culture and Education, and Li Dongmei, Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges, to articulate their vision for GXNU’s role in achieving the national goal of becoming a world leader in education, innovation, and talent cultivation.

Huai Jinpeng, China’s Minister of Education, spoke of initiatives aimed at improving the quality of basic education, promoting scientific exploration, and enhancing the connection between education at all levels — from primary and secondary schooling to higher education.

In doing so, GXNU is not just responding to the call for educational reform and the nurturing of top talent as outlined in Huai Jinpeng’s speech.

It is actively contributing to the development of ‘new quality productive forces’ through a comprehensive approach that includes fostering a large reserve of young scientists, well-rounded youth, and a generation of innovators capable of leading new industrialisation efforts.

As GXNU continues to build on its strengths, the integration of national ambitions with institutional strategies and the vibrancy of cultural exchange on campus plays a pivotal role in not only advancing China’s educational and technological educational system but also in enriching the lives and futures of students from around the world.

Huai Jinpeng continued, “We will also roll out regional technology transfer and transformation centres to provide opportunities for young professionals to sharpen their tools. The training of talent is not only important to people’s livelihood but also to the long-term development of the country and the nation. We are confident and we will resolutely pursue this path.  We intend to support more top talent at home,  provide strategic support and become a leading force for cultivating and developing new quality productive forces while realizing Chinese modernisation.”
